MECAWI & MCHR Co-Sponsor March/Rally to Demand an End to the Five Year Occupation of Iraq

DETROIT --In an effort to demand justice and equality around the world, the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) will hold a “Demonstration Against the War at Home and Abroad” on the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war on Saturday, March 15, 2007 at noon.

“The United States’ plans for global domination are being met by worldwide resistance,” says MECAWI. “The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are a military disaster. Bush and company are threatening a new war with Iran because it refuses to bend its knee to Washington and Wall Street. While at the same time, Israel, armed and directed by the United States, rains down death and destruction upon the Palestinians. It is up to us to make change happen.”

There will be a demonstration in Detroit on Saturday, March 15 to protest the fifth anniversary of the United States invasion and occupation of Iraq. The protest will begin with a gathering at the 'Spirit of Detroit' on Woodward avenue at Jefferson, starting at Noon.

At 1:00pm there will be a march up Woodward avenue to Central United Methodist Church for an anti-war rally.

During the rally there will be reports on the ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, the escalation of tensions with Iran, the impact of Israeli aggression in Palestine, the effects of US war policy on women, the role of the US in the escalating tensions between Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador as well as the AFRICOM threat to the African continent.

Organizers of the march and rally aim to raise awareness of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the continued occupation of Palestine and the siege of Gaza. MECAWI is also demanding that the U.S. get their hands off of Iran.
