PRESIDENT Mugabe has hailed women for their entrepreneurial skills that have seen them managing to fend for their families even in difficult economic conditions.

The President said women were the backbone of the family institution and play a key role in the upbringing of children.

“Madzimai ndimi mava vatungamiri, tinovimba nemi nokuti maakukwanisa kuzviitira, kuzviriritira kuzvifungira kuti vana vanodyei. Zvinobva pakuti ndimi munotitakura kwemwedzi mipfumbamwe, zvinobva pakuti ndimi munochimbizika kuti vana vanodyei.

“Ndimi munoziva kuti hupfu muchahuwana kupi, anezvirukweza apa ndakambosiya hari dzangu saka regai nditevere kamari ndiriritire mhuri,” he said.

President Mugabe paid tribute to women and said they had put Zimbabwe on the map because of their industriousness.

“Totenda zvikuru nekungwara kwamakaita madzimai edu! Rambai muchienda mberi mavanembiri munosvika kuCape Town hapana kwamusingazive,” the President said.

A number of women have embarked on various projects especially cross border trading to cushion their families in the wake of economic problems that have been afflicting Zimbabwe over the past decade due to the illegal sanctions imposed on the country. Because of its pro-women policies, Zanu-PF had more women MPs in the Seventh Parliament, a tradition the party has stuck to by fielding more female candidates for the National Assembly in the harmonised elections.

MDC-T, led by Mr Tsvangirai, recently came under fire over its front man’s treatment of women — having married and divorced in 12 days as well as impregnated a 21-year old Bulawayo woman before initially denying responsibility for the son born of the liaison.
