Egypt launches airstrikes in North Sinai, killing five suspected jihadists, after attacks on military checkpoints in the region killed dozens of security personnel over the weekend

The Egyptian military launched fresh air strikes in North Sinai on Sunday, killing five suspected militants, security sources told Aswat Masriya.

The air strikes in Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid also wounded eight other suspects.

On Friday, two attacks in the region killed at least 31 security personnel, the deadliest day for Egypt's army in the latest surge of militant activity in the Sinai Peninsula.

President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi said on Saturday that the attacks were carried out with "foreign support," without identifying a certain group or country.

The airstrikes on Sunday took place after the military introduced new security measures in the restive region, a haven for extremist militants who have killed hundreds of security personnel since mid-2013. These include a three-month state of emergency in parts of North Sinai, as well asannouncing a new bill that would allow military tribunals to try "matters of terrorism" as well asvandalism and the blocking of roads.

On Saturday, eight suspected jihadists were killed as military airstrikes pounded militant hideouts in the region, security sources said.
